MACRO Circular Opus 8

Fall 1998

During the past year, we have welcomed over thirty new members to MACRO. Many of you are very familiar with all of our various activities, but we decided to print this information again as a resource for our new members.

We encourage you to make use of what we currently offer, and to invite you to create your own new opportunities as well.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:
MACRO is funded by a $487,000 grant housed at the University of Wisconsin Foundation. The interest earned by this grant supports our activities. Membership is free.

WORKSHOP:
Our annual meeting, A Musician's Workshop, provides opportunities for our members to share experiences, perform, and present, all in the wonderful atmosphere of the Monona Terrace. The workshop features sessions from all aspects of music, including performance, analysis, pedagogy, composition, technology, and many others. Our first official "Call for Participation" has generated new and exciting session ideas. Look for our workshop flyer sometime in November.

JOURNAL:
Our scholarly journal, Musical Insights, provides opportunities to publish for all of our members. This is a bi-annual publication produced through the wonderful editorial skills of MACRO member Marilyn Saker. Volume 1 is completed, and work has already begun on volume 2! If you would like to receive a copy contact Jamie Henke (608-263-6822) and she will send one out to you. The deadline for submitting articles for volume 2 of the journal has passed, but especially for busy people, it's not too early to start thinking about articles for volume 3. If you have any questions about the journal, or article submission, please contact Marilyn Saker 734-487-1284 or Orlistat xenical cost. For an easy link to Marilyn, contact our web site macromusic.org after November 1.

NEWSLETTERS:
Our newsletter, the MACRO Circular, is currently created by our MACRO Chair, Jamie Henke. She has no proprietary feelings about this publication however, and welcomes your involvement in the creation of any portion of the newsletter. Our newsletter provides members with a chance to communicate on many different levels. In MACRO News, members can report on any and all of their various activities, whether job related or not. New members are introduced on a regular basis, and there is often a Letter from the Chair, usually a nagging reminder to get involved with all that MACRO has to offer. To date we offer three newsletter Features for Teachers, including "Teaching Hints," "Favorites Music Examples" and "Favorite Written Assignments." As with everything else in MACRO, we are always open to new ideas. Newsletter submission deadlines are as follows:
October 1 newsletter submissions DUE SEPTEMBER 15
February 1 newsletter submissions DUE JANUARY 15
April 1 newsletter submissions DUE MARCH 15
Newsletter submissions (except for articles) will be accepted in ELECTRONIC COPY ONLY. I prefer to receive newsletter submissions via e-mail, but will also accept submissions on disk if you do not have access to an e-mail account. For articles ONLY, I prefer to work with a paper copy. Find an easy link for submission of newsletter items on our MACRO web site, macromusic.org after November 1.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS:
We are very fortunate to be able to offer the Robert Fountain Memorial Scholarship for outstanding students in our organization. Students are invited to participate in everything MACRO has to offer, but this category is for students alone. $500 awards are given on an annual basis, . In addition to the monetary award, the award winner(s) receives publication in our journal Musical Insights. Application materials are due March 1 of each year. For application materials and guidelines contact Jamie Henke, OR go to our MACRO web site after November 1!

WEB SITE:
Our new web site, macromusic.org will be available November 1, 1999. The site will include information about our many activities, as well as all forms needed for participation. Copies of all of our MACRO Circulars, will be available, and easy links for submitting items to the newsletter will be provided. We hope to publish our second MACRO journal on the web, as well as in print format. As always, we are looking for new ideas, or suggestions to improve the site.

RESEARCH GRANTS:
MACRO offers Research Awards in amounts ranging from $500-$1,000. The board will also consider other amounts on a case by case basis for special projects. Award applications will be reviewed in June 2000. Research award money is only available to members of the organization. Projects must take place within one year of application. MACRO encourages projects in all areas of music. We especially encourage projects involving the collaboration of students and faculty, or other group projects of a pedagogical nature. For application materials and guidelines contact Jamie Henke, OR go to our MACRO web site after November 1!

OTHER AWARDS:
The MACRO board has decided to add a Teaching Award to our current list of opportunities. We are currently discussing the guidelines for this award and welcome your input. Please direct your comments to Jamie Henke, MACRO Chair.

Awards for Schools
. The MACRO board will consider funding for schools on an individual basis. The board has discussed providing textbooks for schools, and also strongly encourages projects involving instructor and student/joint participation (included on the research award application).

Travel Assistance to attend the MACRO workshop is provided on a first come first served basis. As our group continues to grow we may need to formalize this procedure, but for now, requesting travel assistance is as simple as sending an e-mail to Orlistat generico como se toma

MACRO NEWS

We've added another Chair!

MACRO has appointed Robert Hodson as our new Chair of Jazz Studies. Rob is a Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Besides his presentations at the MACRO workshops, he has presented research at the annual conferences of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, and has published in Jazz Research Proceedings. He has held teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hope College, and Michigan State University, and has taught courses in music theory, musicianship, keyboard skills, jazz history, and jazz improvisation as well as private piano and jazz piano lessons. As an active jazz performer, Robert has performed with many great musicians including trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and bassist Richard Davis.

One of our other Chairs has added another child!

It's a Boy! Evan Carl Trantham was born on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 1:01 p.m. to Margaret and Gene Trantham. Gene is our Chair of Analysis and Technology. He encourages all members to contribute to Daniel's and Evan's college fund, called the DE(B)T FUND (Daniel and Evan Trantham
fund).

Publications

Congratulations to Charles Rochester Young, on the publication of two of his orchestral works, Fanfare to the Northern Sky and Northern Lights, both published by Southern Music Company. Charles is one of our new members currently teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he also serves as Department Chair.

Promotions

Congratulations to Jamie Henke, MACRO Chair, on her promotion to Faculty Associate. Jamie has also been invited by the Dean of Continuing Studies to speak at the Division's "Celebration of Excellence" in December. Her presentation, "Spinning Threads on the Web: A Model for Instruction," will introduce faculty throughout the Division of Continuing Studies to teaching ideas and techniques for the web. This presentation is the culmination of an extensive six-year project involving the transformation of a one hundred year old tradition of print-based distance education to an on-line format.

Congratulations Macro Research Award Recipients!

To date, these MACRO members have been awarded MACRO Research Awards in the following subject areas.

Robert Hodson, Jazz
David Evan Jones, Composition
Daniel Sommerville, Analysis
Gene Trantham and Timothy Nord, Computer Assisted Instruction

We encourage all members to apply. Collaborative projects involving students and faculty are especially welcome.

*Introducing New Members and MACRO NEWS

MACRO MEMBERS! Please submit e mails introducing yourself if you are a new member, or news items about yourself at any time. We try to catch what we can, but we need your help to make this newsletter a truly collaborative effort. Some of you had sent information to me, but unfortunately due to several major server outages in our Division, those materials were damaged beyond repair. Send e-mails to jamie.henke [at] wisc.edu

Congratulations Composition Contest Winners!

MACRO sponsored it's first composition contest last spring. We received over 50 requests for information from as far away as Israel, Korea, and several European countries. The final 19 scores entered in the competition came from all over the United States, as well as entries from Canada, England, and Italy. The scores were judged by Dr. Walter Halen, emeritus composer from Central Missouri State University, Dr. Michael Hooley, composer and percussionist from Truman State University, and our own Warren Gooch, composer and theorist at Truman State University.

First Prize

David Evan Jones, Santa Cruz, California for Daichavo Za Maiko, a piece for Bb clarinet and piano.

Second Prize

Alice Ho, Toronto, Canada for Caprice, a piece for piano.

Third Prize

Kevin Troiano, Cambridge England for Suite for Bass and Piano.

Musical Quotes Score Again!

"He'd be better off shoveling snow." Richard Strauss on Arnold Schoenberg.

When told that a soloist would need six fingers to perform his concerto, Arnold Schoenberg replied, "I can wait."

"His music used to be original. Now it's aboriginal." Sir Ernest Newman on Igor Stravinsky.

"We cannot expect you to be with us all the time, but perhaps you could be good enough to keep in touch now and again." Sir Thomas Beecham to a musician during a rehearsal.

"Jack Benny played Mendelssohn last night. Mendelssohn lost." Anonymous

MACRO WORKSHOP 2000! Mark your calendars, the date for the Macro Workshop has been set for June 23-24, 2000 at the Monona Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin. By popular demand we will be featuring another open performance session, as well as a workshop within a workshop session on how to apply for awards and other MACRO opportunities.
